When you've faced a class of middle schoolers who would rather be watching TikTok than singing, you don't know. These short songs are a tribute to those who have answered the call. They were forged in the fires of the middle school music classroom from a need to create interactive ways to teach music theory to unwilling singers. Yes, these songs are ridiculous. That's the point. Acknowledge that. Embrace it.

Solo Horn in F, 2017. Quasi improvisando. The River Pant rises in northwest Essex, in England, and flows through Great Sampford, the village in which the composer grew up. Hoping for serenity, the horn disturbs itself throughout the piece. Motif transcends melody in this dramatic piece. Beginning or mid-recital piece.

Solo Oboe, 2017. Quasi improvisando. Beltane is also known as May Day, a Pagan holiday signaling the beginning of summer and the peak of spring. The oboe calls, almost barks at the beginning of summer. Tonally centered but not "in a key." Good to start a recital.

Trombone & Piano, 2018. One movement (lyrical feel, agitated, fast). Commissioned by Shachar Israel of the Cleveland Orchestra, The title is taken from a passage in the Book of Psalms & intends to represent the energy & beauty present in the few moments before dawn breaks. And "Shachar" - in Hebrew - means "Dawn." The piece has a tonal backbone but enjoys its dissonance.
Level: Experienced college & up (trombone & piano)
Two Violins, 2023. There are generous stylistic and harmonic nods of recognition to the duos of Bartók here. Starts slow with violins competing against each other, then lively. Works well at the end of a recital.

Violin & Piano, 2020. Medb (often anglicized as “Maeve”) is the Irish Connaught warrior queen. This piece begins calmly, but, as the simple piano part stays steady, the violin becomes increasingly agitated. The piano keeps the piece tonal as the violin pushes tonal boundaries.

This song is a corker. The Edge from U2 once said he'd love to have written it, apparently. It's a relatively easy two-part arrangement that's perfect for choirs looking to energize their middle or high school performance. Alternate lyrics to the original ending (which are somewhat dated) have been included in addition to the original lyrics in the score.
